Sam's Chowder House Reviews

If you have a pet and need to sit outside, please come to the restaurant and we’ll seat you if we have outdoor tables available, or add you to our waitlist for next available outdoor tables. Indoor reservations are available Monday-Friday, as well as walk-ins. A select number of reservations are available during winter hours on Saturday-Sunday, as well as walk-ins. The chowder is one of the most popular items at Sam’s, and it is easy to see why. I just tried the New England; it was made in the traditional style with clam broth, creme, clams, potatoes, bacon, onion, and thyme.

Menu

I sat down and quickly ordered the lobster roll, which The Today Show called one of the five best sandwiches in America. Here is all the info from that visit and my return to Sams in 2022. Our version of this journey begins in Point Reyes Station, north of San Francisco. There, you’ll want to stock up on triple cream Mt Tam cheese from Cowgirl Creamery and scarf as many straight-from-the-bay oysters as you can get down.

Santa Barbara

I was surprised by how much ahi they gave you as it could easily be shared with two people. I guarantee you won’t be leaving any behind, it is that good, and the ahi is that fresh. The chips are great as well, and I confirmed that they are baked in-house, which is why they tasted so good. When you are staying next to a restaurant that always has a full parking lot, then you know it must be good. That was the case for Sam’s Chowder House in Half Moon Bay, which I visited on the last night I was in town, staying next door at Beach House – Half Moon Bay. It was a busy Friday night with live music playing and everyone talking and having a great time.

ABOUT SAM'S CHOWDER HOUSE

Sam’s Chowder House restaurant in Half Moon Bay serves sustainable ocean fresh seafood, reminiscent of a New England style seafood house. NBC-TV’s The TODAY Show featured Sam’s famous Lobster Rolls, which were selected by the Food Editor as one of the five “Best Sandwiches in America”. This casual, family-friendly restaurant includes outdoor oceanfront dining with a pet-friendly patio.

Half Moon Bay Area

Your eating adventure will continue from there – you’d better start hungry. Sam’s is available to host private gatherings, corporate offsites, and oceanfront weddings for your special events, all featuring gorgeous ocean views. Check the live SamCams mounted on our rooftop for sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and Pillar Point Harbor, and Half Moon Bay’s latest weather report. If oysters are on the menu at somewhere that I trust, then I have a hard time not ordering them. I already had a full meal ordered, so I just tried the two most popular kind, the Kumamoto and the Point Reyes oyster. I would say the Kumamoto is better as it has more flavor, but they are both good.

The coleslaw that went with it was creamy and superb as well. I usually don’t like coleslaw, but I found myself eating it with the lobster pieces as it added a complementary flavor. I ate the roll slow to savor every bite of the lobster, and it is something I would come back to Half Moon Bay for. It is different than a Boston lobster roll but good in its own, West Coast way. This dish has ample portions of melt in your mouth ahi that has been marinated in soy sauce, sesame oil, and green onion.

It was a delicious chowder; I appreciated that it was light on the cream as that makes it much easier to eat with a meal. There were good sized pieces of clams in the chowder as well, which was fantastic, and the bacon added a robust flavor to make it a solid chowder. When the main course arrived, it was overflowing with lobster. The lobster came on a sweet, buttery toasted slice of bread, which let the lobster shine without introducing too many other flavors. I was impressed by how much lobster I got with the sandwich; it was worth the price paid.

Custom Subwoofer Boxes

blueprint 4th order bandpass subwoofer box design

Pictured below is the Hornresp input screen for a series-tuned 6th order bandpass system using the same driver. In this case the rear section is 30.5 litres in volume and tuned with a vent 49.1 cm long with a cross-sectional area of 150 sq.cm. That connects to the front section, and the front section is 40 litres in volume and tuned with a vent 12.5 cm long with a cross-sectional area of sq.cm. The resulting passband is wider than that of the 4th order bandpass system that was previously simulated with the same driver. However the resulting box size is also quite a bit bigger.

Custom Sub Enclosures

The 4th order bandpass box design is not recommended for the first time builder. You need some experience before you get into these complicated designs. Actually, if you are a good listener and/or are savvy with enclosure design software, you shouldn’t have much of a hassle when making this kind of project.

h Order Bandpass Enclosure Calculator

If you want to crunch numbers when choosing your speaker, you can divide fs / Qes , and the smaller the number, the better (lower than 60). This means a good bandpass speaker will have a low fs, or high Qes, or both. As you can see from the simulation, the out of band noise starts from around 350 Hz, and the predicted level peaks at around 3dB below the passband level. This out of band noise will be very audible, unless it is dealt with using one of the techniques previously described.

SUB BOX DESIGNS

This is a calculator for designing a 4th Order Bandpass Enclosure. As you can see from the graph above, fL and fH are positioned -3 db after the response starts to roll-off (for low and high frequencies). The passband ripple measures the amount of variation from linear response. High amount of ripple will result in peaks / dips in the frequency response. Judging from our graph the ripple looks like around ±0.5 db.

Nissan 370Z Dual Upfire Subwoofer Enclosure

blueprint 4th order bandpass subwoofer box design

Most sealed enclosures are best for sound quality and limited space applications. The subwoofer, depending on specific variables, may tend to play much tighter and more accurately then a typical vented enclosure. Choosing a sealed enclosure is also a great way to go when it comes to confined cargo areas and limited cost for construction. The 4th order bandpass box design is definitely an interesting solution. If you do not need a wide frequency response, and want a boost in output, you should seriously consider it.

How do the panels go together

I design custom sound systems made specifically for you and your vehicle, speakers, listening goals and more. I specialize in subwoofer boxes but I have also designed plenty of other sound systems, including some for boats, home theatres, and even portable Bluetooth boomboxes. All of my custom designs include 3D models and all the information you need to build your box yourself, or get some family and friends and make it a DIY project. I am now also working with builders to have your custom box made and shipped to you, or picked up locally in a few locations in Georgia, USA.

How to make a bandpass box ?

The problem is, even if you conceive a good 4th order bandpass design, but have slight building errors, the result will be sub-par. Now that you are all encouraged, let’s learn more about these bandpass enclosures. Pictured below are (1) the input screen for a 4th order bandpass system in Hornresp. The driver in question is the Dayton Audio PA310-8, and the semi-inductance option is enabled. Just above you can find the position of each panel along the length of the box.

Furthermore, the dimensions for the amp cutout is also present. If you buy the Bash amplifier or use some other plate amp, make sure to check what the correct cutout is. Again, if you plan to use this DIY 4th order bandpass subwoofer for your car, you can leave this panel be and simply drill two 7 mm holes for the binding posts.

Bandpass Box (4th, Parallel 6th, Series 6th Order, Clamshell) - Custom Design Blueprint

However, you can drill some holes to pass some wire and seal the holes. Furthermore, the binding posts are mandatory if you plan to use this DIY 4th order bandpass subwoofer box in a car. On the panel where the amp will be, just place the binding posts there and you’re done. This guide will show you how to make a DIY 4th order bandpass subwoofer for home. It’s an active subwoofer as it uses a plate amplifier.

Remember, at the beginning of the article, we talked about some parameters that are relevant to this project. This ripple, describes how many ±db, the frequency response will digress from linear response. In a perfect world the ripple would be ±0 db, which is achievable.

Picking a certain value for S, will narrow your possibilities for the other factors we need to figure out. Another guideline which is useful when choosing S, is that if you go for a bigger value (0.7), the frequency response will be narrower. On the other hand, a lower value S (0.5), would translate into a wider frequency response.

The two most common type of bandpass subwoofer systems are the 4th order bandpass system and the 6th order bandpass system (which can be be "parallel-tuned" or "series-tuned"). Usually used for midrange drivers, to filter low frequencies and high frequencies at the same time, only to let the frequencies between the crossover points pass. How is this passive filter example relevant to the bandpass speaker enclosure ? It is, because when you look at the frequency response of a bandpass subwoofer, it looks exactly like the frequency response of a speaker with a bandpass filter on it.

So, we have figured out that the frequency response will be from 38 Hz to 88 Hz, with a +5 db boost and ±0.35 db ripple. The reason for the above image is to illustrate those trapezoidal braces. The Monacor amp will be super hard to find in the US market. I would use a Dayton Audio plate amplifier but those leak air if you don’t place them in a separate chamber (No, thanks!). Here is a table with the values of S, and the values of the frequency response and sensitivity, corresponding to that certain S value. Get familiar with this table, as we will need it for the next step as well.

The Anatomy of a Cruise Ship: Key Areas and What They Offer

parts of a cruise ship

These clinics have trained medical professionals and are equipped with basic medical supplies and equipment. Cruise ships usually have doctors and nurses on board to provide medical care and treatment to passengers and crew. One of the most essential systems onboard a ship is the propulsion system, which provides the necessary power to move the vessel through the water.

What are the electrical systems on a ship?

It is here that pistons hammer and crankshafts turn to propel the ship forward. It is the loud and oily place where the Chief Engineer and his team work around the clock to ensure that everything is running smoothly. It is the engine room of the ship that allows for the luxuries of air-conditioning, electricity, and plumbing on board cruise ships. The gyro compass consists of a fast-rotating disk, usually positioned in a gimbal. It is a non-magnetic compass oriented parallel to the axis of rotation of the earth and thus indicates the north-south direction.

Water Slides and Fun

Although you can expect to find the basics such as a bed, bathroom, closet, phone and TV, each type of cabin brings a different experience worth considering. The Rising Tide Bar is a unique bar located on the Harmony of the Seas, a Royal Caribbean cruise ship. The Rising Tide Bar is the first of its kind on a cruise ship, as it can transport passengers from one deck to another. The space is often designed with efficiency in mind, preparing food quickly to feed thousands of passengers.

Can Passengers Explore the Hull?

Some sections are deemed fundamental, as they are shared by all ships, but others are merely extras that provide elegant or enhanced shipping. All ship components should be inspected for proper operation, and precautions should be taken with potentially hazardous equipment. They are installed on the deck, are powered by an electric motor (sometimes hydraulically), and can raise up to 50 tons. On cargo ships, in general, these cranes are evidently one of the most essential components.

Engine Rooms

Proper maintenance and operation of these systems are essential for the efficient and safe operation of the vessel. These are just a few of the many safety features that can be found on modern ships. By ensuring that a ship is equipped with the appropriate safety equipment, crew members and passengers can sail with confidence and peace of mind. Effective navigation and communication are critical components of risk management on a ship.

parts of a cruise ship

Cruise Season Underway for Scotland’s Largest Port

Whenever someone is on board a ship, it’s important for them to have a PFD readily available. PFDs are designed to keep a person afloat in the water and can be used to help someone stay safe while waiting for rescue. PFDs come in many different styles, including vests and inflatable devices. The cargo hold must also be equipped with various systems to ensure the safety of the cargo during transportation. This includes systems for securing the cargo, monitoring its temperature and humidity, and preventing damage during rough seas.

Large tanks containing the fuel needed to power the ship’s engines are usually located towards the bottom. Their placement helps in maintaining the ship’s balance and stability. Typically situated deep within the ship, the engine rooms house the primary machinery that powers the cruise ship. From massive diesel engines to electrical systems, this is where the ship’s heartbeat resides.

Imagine if you sliced a cruise ship floor by floor, looked at it from an aerial view (like an architectural floor plan of a house) and indicated what was where. Electrical distribution panels are used to regulate the flow of electricity to different parts of the ship, ensuring that each system receives the appropriate amount of power. These panels are often located in the engine room or other central locations on the vessel. That’s why many ships are equipped with fire suppression systems that can help to quickly extinguish any flames that might break out. Modern cargo handling cranes use hydraulic or electric power for their operation.

Cruise Staff and Ship Crew Terms

This build-up of biological fouling (epibosis), can, over time, damage the protective paint and metal structures of the bottom of the ship. The terrace is floor-shaped, covering the front of the passenger ship. The port hand is on the ship’s left side or port side, close to the front. All the machinery in the engine rooms is monitored in the Engine Control Room (ECR). The ECR is a room full of screens, lights, alarms, and switches from where the current operational status of every piece of equipment can be checked. Radars are devices that allow us to locate distant objects from a given location, regardless of visibility and weather conditions.

The side shell is the outer plating on the sides of the ship, which provides structural strength and protects the vessel from damage. Other critical components, such as bulkheads, double bottom, and the ship's internal framework, are not visible from the outside but are crucial elements of the hull structure. By law it is required by ships to load only up to the load line marking for the designated water type.

They are made up of series of plates jointed together called stakes along with other structural member such as plating and stiffeners. An anchor is made of five major parts; shank, crown, stock, flute and tripping ring. A shank is a fixed stem structure which is fitted together with flute by the tripping pin passing through the shank hole. To prevent this, the metal hulls are painted with an anti-fouling paint, which contains copper which acts as a coating of biocide.

With all the propulsion and auxiliary machinery installed in place it is also called as the heart of the ship. Ships hull are designed as such to offer minimum resistance to water, is feasible and economical to construct without losing on much needed cargo space. One can easily calculate and improve the overall efficiency of a ship calculating and reducing hull’s resistance to ships motion. A bulbous bow is the one that you will see in most ships including that used for commercial shipping.

It comprises the front portion of the upper deck and does not exceed 7 percent of the total deck length. It is immediately identifiable on a ship’s structure by an abrupt rise in the foredeck near the bow. A bow thruster is a propeller-like device installed on both sides of the bow of a ship. It is used to improve a ship’s agility in congested waters at low speeds, such as in canals or near ports. The pilot house is the primary section of the bridge from which the ship is commanded and navigated.

Can I Add Cruise Control to my Car?

For example, an aftermarket self-driving kit from Comma.ai is usually available on eBay. If you answered yes (or you’re willing to learn), then cruise control might be coming soon to your vehicle. And if you think this is beyond your skill set, most auto shops can install a kit for you. If you’re an auto enthusiast, you probably take pleasure in the response from stomping the gas pedal.

About Rostra

But c’mon folks, we can also admit that a long highway trip is more pleasant with cruise control. The Cruise Control Store has been selling and installing cruise controls for over 25 years. Rostra has been manufacturing these cruise control units for years, and is an ISO9001 certified company that has proven to be one of the largest manufactures of cruise controls in the United States. If everything is working, your car should be ready for further testing on the highway.

They are compatible with 2,000 to 40,000 pulse-per-mile speedometer signals. If you own a Nissan, and you want to add cruise control to it, shop with The Cruise Control Store. Here, we sell high-quality aftermarket cruise control kits that are a breeze to install. Nissan is an automobile manufacturer that was founded in 1933 and has been going strong ever since—they are the leading brand in China, Russia, and Mexico, and are popular in the States as well.

If you have some basic skills, this DIY upgrade can happen in an hour or two. While most of our customers install these aftermarket kits themselves, we recommend professional install of this cruise control system. While aftermarket cruise control is available to hands-on DIYers, that’s not yet mainstream for so-called adaptive cruise control.

These kits are available for a variety of different applications including standard mechanical throttle vehicles as well as drive-by-wire throttle vehicles. At The Cruise Control Store, we’re proud to offer after market cruise control kits, but if you need just the cruise control switch, we have those too. We offer an array of different universal switches, so no matter what type of vehicle you drive, you’ll be able to find just what you need in our inventory. For GM LS drive-by-wire engines, explore the Dakota Digital Cruise Control kits with direct VSS or diagnostic port connections. Additionally, find the Lokar U-Cut-To-Fit Cruise Control Cable for carbureted engines, offering flexibility and reliability in cruise control kit installation. The Dakota Digital Cruise Control kits in our inventory are engineered for precision and ease of use. At The Cruise Control Store, we offer an inventory with an array of products to suit many different needs. For instance, one car from GM will require a different cruise control switch than a similar car from Ford. For that reason, we offer many different types of cruise control switch, including brushed aluminum and polished aluminum, left-side mount and right-side mount, adjustable switches, and universal switches. Depending on what type of vehicle you drive, we at The Cruise Control Store will be able to recommend a certain cruise control switch that will be most compatible with your vehicle.

Cruises from Galveston, Texas

royal caribbean cruise terminal galveston

The Port of Galveston has wheelchairs available for use during embarkation and disembarkation. If wheelchairs are required for the duration of the sailing, passengers are responsible for providing their own or contacting their cruise line to inquire about rentals. The Strand Historic District is within walking distance of Terminal 25 and Terminal 28, while passengers at Terminal 10 will want to take a rideshare or taxi. A national historic landmark, The Strand includes buildings from the late 1800s and early 1900s, peppered with eateries, bars and shops.

Where to stay the night before your cruise

Once on the check-in level, you’ll be guided to an agent that will confirm your details, check any required documents and get your ready to board. From there, it’s a quick pass through security, and then you’re on your way to the ship. On either side of the entrance is a stairway and escalators to the check-in area. Head up and you’ll reach the second floor of the terminal that leads to boarding the ship. All this is to say that Cruise Terminal 10 is without a doubt a major addition to Galveston cruising. But with the new terminal also come a lot of new changes, including everything from the terminal location to where to park.

Convenient Port Canaveral “Park & Cruise” Hotels

Galveston Island is a gem for Texas tourism — and it’s easy to see why. Fascinating history, well-preserved 18th century architecture, gorgeous beaches and thrilling outdoor adventures. Experience all this and cruise out of Galveston with Travel Weekly’s Best Cruise Line Overall 19 years running. The first Allure of the Seas sailing is scheduled on November 13, 2022 to coincide with the opening of Terminal 3 cruise terminal.

Galveston port parking coupon

The island's Seawall, which is where the beaches are, is on the opposite end of the island. The Port of Galveston is also conveniently located as it's in close proximity to the charming Strand Historic District. The first thing that you should know — especially if you’ve sailed from Galveston before — is that the terminal is not located right next to the older cruise terminals. So if you’ve sailed on a Royal Caribbean cruise in the old terminal, you’ll need to go to a different spot. If you arrive in Houston late at night, your best bet is to stay near the airport and catch a shuttle or rideshare service to Galveston the following morning.

The new building is also the cruise line's first zero energy terminal, meaning that it's completely powered by solar panels. The energy required to power the terminal is produced through 30,000 square feet of on-site solar photovoltaic panels. The $125 million building -- officially named Terminal 3 -- expands Royal Caribbean’s presence in the Texan port, increasing its ability to welcome up to 630,000 guests each year.

Not only can Terminal 3 handle Oasis Class ships, it will also be able to accommodate Royal Caribbean's new Icon Class ships. Architects Bermello Ajamil & Partners Inc. came up with the look of the new terminal, but this firm is no stranger to Royal Caribbean. They also designed Terminal A in Miami, Cape Liberty Cruise Terminal, and Port Everglades' Terminal 18 and 25. It will is a LEED-certified terminal (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), which means it is environmentally responsible and use resources efficiently. The new terminal is located at Pier 10 for exclusive use by Royal Caribbean.

Parking at the Port of Galveston

You can find less expensive Galveston cruise parking elsewhere, but just keep in mind it may take longer to shuttle between the ship and your parking given the location of the terminal. For example, parking at the Pier 14 Lot runs $153.55 for a one-week cruise. If there is a certain lot that you want to park, it’s a good idea to reserve online ahead of time through the Port of Galveston to ensure that you get a space.

In this case, you’ll enter the terminal area at the intersection of Harborside and 14th Street/Royal Caribbean Way. Then, you can follow Royal Caribbean Way to Royal Caribbean Circle (and just follow the signage to the terminal). This will lead you right to the front of the terminal where you will see the large area for luggage drop-off. The first thing that you’ll notice is the large blue façade with the massive Royal Caribbean logo sitting proudly at the center. On either side of the main terminal building are luggage drop-off areas and plenty of space to pull up and drop off passengers or baggage.

Guests who park outside of the Port of Galveston will need to arrange transport to the cruise terminal. The North Lot (1152 Royal Caribbean Way) is onsite and within walking distance of the cruise terminal. The Port of Galveston is located on the island of Galveston on Galveston Bay and has three terminals dedicated to cruise ships.

Because Royal Caribbean’s terminal is brand new, it’s best to call the parking companies to check whether or not they will provide shuttles from the lot to Cruise Terminal 3. Because Houston’s airports are located miles from the Port of Galveston, it’s important to budget enough time to disembark the cruise ship, travel to Houston, check-in for your flight, and go through security. Royal Caribbean offers a shuttle service to and from both the George Bush Intercontinental and William P. Hobby airports, and this can be one of the most convenient options for travelers. New cruise terminals are more than just a place to check-in and board your cruise. With the new building comes a smoother process, as well as enhancements in the embarkation and disembarkation procedures.

For Terminal 25 and Terminal 28, Lot A (160 33rd Street) and Lot B (224 33rd Street) offer free shuttle bus service for cruisers both to and from the terminal. An Express Lot (2702 Harborside Dr.) is within walking distance of Terminal 25 and Terminal 28. The other area is on the east side of the terminal where larger shuttle buses park to shuttle passengers, but there are also lanes for picking up similar to what you see at an airport.

There are agents lined up to check you in by scanning your SetSail pass. This is when completing the online check-in before the cruise pays off, because if you do everything ahead of time, this will take a matter of seconds. Keep in mind the waiting area if you have a later check-in time was uncovered from the sun on the day I was there. Once you drop off your luggage, the entrance is towards the front of the terminal.

You’ll discover why it’s nicknamed the “Pearl of the South” as you amble through lovely squares and past colonial architecture. Take a break in Plaza Las Delicias to enjoy the fountains and leafy trees, and then stop in the Museum of History to learn more about the economy, architecture, and politics of Ponce’s past and see interesting artifacts and photographs of the city. In Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands, guests can snorkel or grab a signature Painkiller cocktail in White Bay.

The Art Museum of Ponce, home of the iconic “Flaming June” by Sir Frederic Leighton (which is currently on loan to the Royal Academy of Arts in London), recently reopened its doors after extensive repairs. At Pozuelo, a fishermen’s neighborhood beyond the city center, go to El Arcoiris for one of my childhood favorites, the octopus salad with a side of tostones. Or bite into a crispy alcapurria — a fritter made of banana and root vegetables — at El Fogón de Susa as you stroll along the beach. After a feast at Gallo Pinto, one must save room for ice cream at one of Guayama’s classic spots, Rex Cream. Owned by Chinese-Cuban immigrants, the Louke Chang family, it’s a mandatory stop.

Highway 2 takes you west to Cabo Rojo and up the western coast, and Route 3 takes you along the eastern coast with scenic ocean views of Patillas and Maunabo. There are two port facilities in San Juan -- one is a 10-minute ride, close to the airport, called the Pan American terminal, while the main cruise terminal (Piers 1, 3 and 4) is just a short walk from downtown Old San Juan. A 10- to 15-minute walk will get you to most restaurants and attractions (about 25 minutes to El Morro). At the terminal itself, local vendors usually set up stands selling knick-knacks as souvenirs.

We teamed up with the people who know each destination best: the locals.
